111개 정보인권단체, 페이스북의 양단간 보안 정책 강화를 요구하는 공개 서신 발송
지난 2019년 10월 4일, 미국, 영국, 호주 정부는 페이스북에 보낸 공개 서신을 통해, 페이스북의 보안 강화 정책을 유보해달라고 요청했습니다. 아동 성착취를 포함한 범죄 단속을 저해할 수 있다는 이유에서입니다.
그러나 전 세계 111개 정보인권단체들은 강력한 보안이야말로 자유로운 소통, 공공 안전, 민주적 가치에 필수적임을 강조하며 페이스북에 정부의 요구에 굴복하지 말고 보안 강화에 계속 노력할 것을 촉구했습니다. 진보네트워크센터도 공동 서신에 함께 하였습니다.

페이스북의 양단간 보안 계획(END-TO-END SECURITY PLANS)에 대한 공개 서신
오늘 아래 서명한 단체들은 페이스북의 메시징 서비스 전반에 양단간 보안의 증진을 계속 추진할 것을 분명하게 촉구합니다.
미국, 영국, 호주 정부는 “[페이스북이] 보안 강화가 공공 안전을 축소하는 것이 아님을 보장할 수 있을 때까지” 이 계획을 중단할 것을 요청한 바 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 그들이 완전히 퇴행했다고 생각합니다. 플랫폼이 강력한 양단간 보안을 지원하지 않는다면 데이터가 유출되거나 잘못 다뤄지거나 혹은 강력한 권력 혹은 범죄자에게 취득되어 악용될 수 있습니다.
페이스북 메시징 서비스의 놀라운 범위를 고려할 때, 양단간 보안을 기본적으로 보장하는 것은 세계적으로 자유로운 소통, 공공 안전, 민주적 가치에 필수적입니다. 우리는 페이스북의 전 제품 및 서비스에 걸쳐 메시지를 암호화하는 당신의 계획을 계속 진행할 것을 촉구합니다. 우리는 소위 “백도어” 혹은 이용자 메시지 내용에의 “예외적인 접근”을 가능하게 해달라는 (정부들의) 요구에 맞설 것을 요구합니다. 그것은 암호화 및 모든 이용자의 프라이버시와 보안을 근본적으로 약화시킬 것입니다.
