한국, 국제원자력기구(IAEA) 이사회 의장국 취임
1. 한국은 2021년 9월 27일 오스트리아 빈에서 열린 이사회에서 만장일치로 차기 국제원자력기구(IAEA) 이사회 의장으로 선출되었다.
ㅇ 한국이 1957년 IAEA 창립회원국으로 가입한 이후 의장국을 맡은 것은 이번이 처음이다.
ㅇ 회장 임기는 2021년 9월부터 1년이다. 신채현 주오스트리아 대사이자 비엔나 주재 국제기구 상임대표가 의장을 맡는다.
2. IAEA는 원자력 분야의 과학 및 기술 협력을 위한 최고의 국제 기구입니다. 이사회는 35개 회원국으로 구성됩니다. IAEA의 주요 정책 결정 기구입니다. 이란과 북한을 포함한 국가의 핵활동에 대한 세이프가드 조치의 조사 및 검증, 핵안전, 핵안보, 핵기술의 응용 등 IAEA의 실질적인 문제를 검토하고 총회에 권고한다.
ㅇ 이사회 의장은 일반적으로 연 5회 개최되는 이사회 회의와 이사회의 두 상임 위원회인 프로그램 및 예산 위원회와 기술 지원 및 협력 위원회의 회의를 주재합니다. 의장은 또한 회의 전에 이사회의 주요 문제에 대해 IAEA 사무국, 지역 그룹 및 IAEA 같은 생각을 가진 그룹과 협의하고 조정합니다.
3. 핵무기 비확산 및 원자력의 평화적 이용 분야에서 중추적 역할을 하고 있는 IAEA 이사회 의장국은 비확산 및 적극적인 분야에서 IAEA에 대한 기여.
4. 우리 정부는 IAEA 이사회 의장으로서 IAEA 주요 현안에 대한 참여와 기여를 확대하고 북핵 문제와 한반도의 평화와 안정에 대한 국제사회의 보다 강력한 지지를 받을 것이다.

Korea Assumes Chairmanship of Board of Governors of International Atomic Energy Agency
1. Korea was elected as next Chair of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on September 27, 2021, by consensus at the Board of Governors meeting in Vienna, Austria.
° This is the first time for Korea to assume the chairmanship since it joined the IAEA in 1957 as one of its founding members.
° The term of the chairmanship starts in September 2021 and lasts for one year. H.E. Shin Chae-Hyun, Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, will serve as Chair.
2. The IAEA is the premier international organization for scientific and technical cooperation in the nuclear field. Its Board of Governors consists of 35 member states. It is a key policy-making body of the IAEA. It examines and makes recommendations to the General Conference on the practical issues of the IAEA, such as the investigation and verification of safeguard measures on the nuclear activities of countries including Iran and North Korea, nuclear safety, nuclear security, and applications of nuclear technologies.
° The Chair of the Board presides over the meetings of the Board which generally take place five times per year, and the meetings of the two standing Committees of the Board -- the Programme and Budget Committee and the Technical Assistance and Cooperation Committee. The Chair also holds consultations and coordinates with the Secretariat of the IAEA, regional groups, and like-minded groups of the IAEA on the key issues of the Board before the meetings.
3. Korea’s chairmanship of the Board of Governors of the IAEA, which plays a pivotal role in the fields of the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and the peaceful use of nuclear energy, is attributable to the country’s exemplary record in non-proliferation and active contributions to the IAEA in the field.
4. As Chair of the IAEA’s Board of Governors, the Korean government will expand its involvement in and contributions to the key IAEA issues and win stronger support from the international community on the North Korean nuclear issue and for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
